I live in ny and it is very cold and snowy. My neighbors cat has been out in the storm and is always left outside. He climbs on their screen and cries to be let in but they're not home. I put out food and water for him and a small box with a towel that I hope he'll sleep in and be a bit warm. He is so sweet. I can't just let him in bc he needs to see a vet 1st as I have an indoor cat to protect. And a dog that he is wary of, he's friendly though. I am going to tell the people I fed him when they were gone. Maybe they will admit they don't want him. I don't know if I can take him even then. What should I do?
RESPONSE:
Rose,
Exactly the same thing happened to me a while ago. I ended up writing an article called "Cat Neglect" so I could share some ideas. I think you will find the information helpful so here is the link: Cat Neglect
When you love animals as much as you and I do, it's difficult to watch some poor creature suffering because of the indifference and neglect of a neighbor. In my case we ended up adding Giorgio (the neglected cat) to our household. We didn't want to add a 6th cat...but what could we do other than send him to a shelter. He was so sweet and loving that we just had to save him.
You only have to look at him since we've given him a home and he returns the look with purring. His motor runs constantly when he's with us and only stops when he sleeps. There is no greater reward for us than to see such appreciation.
I wish you well and hope you can talk to the neighbor and have him join your household if you can manage it. I salute you for caring.
