Hi my cats tail got caught under my car tyre three days ago. Her X-ray determined she has a dislocation of the vertebrae at the root of her tail, and her spinal column has been severed above her sacrum. She has elimination problems. It's early days yet, and she has responded to pain relief and anti inflammatory medication. My question is this...How long, if ever, will it take for her to regain the proper use of her bowels? She hasn't gone toilet deliberately since her injury. She is incontinent. I DONT want to euthanise her. So if my vet suggests it, I want a time frame with which to expect a sign of improvement. Also if that doesn't happen, is it possible for me to manually eliminate her bowel and bladder? Thanks in advance for your help. Michelle M.
RESPONSE:
Yes, it is possible to manually eliminate both the bowel and bladder. This is something your vet can show you how to do or check on U-tube, they have numerous "how to videos" of almost everything.
Another alternative is cat diapers. Here is the link to our page on this:
Cat Diapers
The time frame for your cat's recovery is dependent on a lot of factors that your vet is better equipped to answer for you. I wish you well and hope the recovery will be successful in time.
