Hello,I have a 2yr.old male cat and has crystals in urine but has no problem with eating drinking or urinating, the problem is he refuses to use the litter box to urinate, there's no problem with him using the box for his feces.why would that be? I have 2 males and each have a designated box. The problem has been going on for about a month.
RESPONSE:
Although your cat is eating and drinking well, and urinating outside the box, his problem could be in the early stages. I suspect he has discomfort urinating and associates the litter box with that discomfort. Since eliminating feces doesn't give him pain he doesn't have an issue with using the litter box for that.
Its important to deal with the urine crystals now, before it becomes a bigger problem such as kidney stones. Many cats eliminate the crystals when they urinate and you never know they had them but when a cat's behavior changes such as not using the litter box, its better to check further.
Your vet can do an urinalysis and determine if a simple diet change can deal with the problem or if a more involved process will be needed.
