Fur Mowing Mystery

Hello,
My 13 yo female cat is of normal weight and in good health. However, she engages in fur mowing on her back legs, belly and tail. Her brother passed away a month ago, but they weren't on great terms. We have two other neutered male cats.

I have read that it could be allergies, stress, arthritis, or ???? I have tried giving her glucosamine and chondroitin sprinkled in her food to no effect. She does tend towards having a nervous disposition. We have a feliway diffuser running at all times in her favorite room.

She has a yearly check up coming soon and I wanted to feel informed as I asked the vet these same questions I am asking you.

Any thoughts on how to puzzle this out? Should we try an antidepressant? How can I be sure she isn't in pain?

RESPONSE:

The only thing that comes to mind right away is feline alopecia which is cat hair loss. My cat Max had a problem with over grooming his hair off. Here is the link to the page:
