Dark Cat Food and Dark Stools

by Melissa Native
(Florida)

Will very dark dry cat food cause cat stools to be darker? We are concerned but do not see blood in stools. We hope it's from the dark dry cat food

RESPONSE:

Melissa,

There are numerous dark cat foods (soft and dry foods)that can cause the dark stools that you mention. It is typically nothing to be concerned about unless there are other changes in your cat such as frequent vomiting or lethargy.

Its good that you have checked the stools because dark brown or black stools can be a sign of internal bleeding or liver disease while red blood suggests an issue in the lower intestinal tract.

Since you haven't mentioned any symptoms other than the dark color then it sounds like the dark cat food is the source.

If you notice any behavioral changes or other physical symptoms then you may want to visit your vet.
