big black spot on my cats upper palate

What can cause this? I just adopted this silver bengal 3 year old. I just noticed this spot when she yawned. No other concerns. Could it be a birth mark, like some humans have? she doesn't appear to have any difficulties or other symptoms.

RESPONSE:

You made a good guess. It is similar to a birth mark and it appears on the palate of black cats frequently. My black cat, Max, has the mark and my grey tabby, Coty, also has several. Since your cat is healthy and showing no other symptoms it sounds like the harmless pigmentation that happens with certain breeds of cats.

For example, orange cats are notorious for getting brown/black marks on their noses and lips etc. which are similar to humans having freckles. The main time to get concerned is if the mark is raised like a mole.

So I'm pretty sure that your beautiful silver Bengal is displaying her DNA traits.

Black spot on roof of mouth

I rescued a grey and black tabby (thick black lines and they’re in a pattern) and I have had many people ask me if he’s part Bengal.
He too, has a black spot on the roof of his mouth.
He turned a year old the end of June, 2023, and weighs 14 lbs so far (it is now the end of September, 2023).
He is in great health so it’s good to see, unless irregular, there’s nothing to worry about.

Dark spot on hard palate

Some years ago, one of my cats went in for a teeth cleaning. They found a dark spot and it turned out to be cancer. Inoperable. Was crushing to see his decline. I have a tabby that has one, too (and almost in the same spot). While most of the information tells me I shouldn’t be worrried, I’d be lying if I wasn’t concerned.

I have always been told it means that they are very intelligent if they have the black spot on the roof of their mouth. Probably an old wives tale, but I have found this to be true with the cats I have had.

My tabby has it also. Glad to find this website and explanation. I was just trying to get some good close up pics of my cats face with my cell phone, and he yawned in one. And to my surprise that is how I discovered the black spot inside the roof of his mouth...when I later looked at the pics. I have a big close up pic of the huge yawn! If this site allowed it, I would upload the pic. It might be helpful for other cat parents to see what we are talking about.

Dark Pigmentation roof of mouth

My grey tabby 2 year old also has the discoloration on the roof of her mouth. No raised areas or redness. From previous comments I see this is not a problem.

Bengal palate

My baby Bengal also has this marking on his palate. I figured it was pigmentation due to his breed.
